A new series?

After finishing the last little guys; I thought I would expand on the whole "robot" theme...

I just really dig the whole 50's-80's sci-fi poster art, comic art thing...

There's the whole nostalgia notion to it, but also- and probably reading way too much into it all (which, yeah.. I never do that) - there's the idea of evolution, or progression of mankind to a certain point. After that point, what do we become? Is it up to us or nature?

So yeah, it's either all that, or I just like to paint robots and not have to worry so much about an overarching "thesis"...

In other news, I am wrapping up my layout for my new website. A couple days or tomorrow it should be up and running... so there's that.. :)

Here's my work so far on the new painting...

Bob Ross?!!?

Yeah, soooo..

I haven't touched this painting in a bit. That's how I roll with my work. I do it for a bit, put it aside, work on something else. It all needs to gestate, digest, regurgitate(!?).

At any rate, yesterday I attempted to work on it some more..

As you can tell from below, it just isn't turning out so swell...

This happens with most pieces in the midpoint, I'm used to it and know that a massive overhaul is needed. (Usually including wiping out, sanding, and basically ruining the "preciousness" of the thing in my head... )

So, here's what we've got so far...

including some Bob Ross mountains in the background.

awww.

Skies...

Just building up the sky with a couple of quick layers of oils... just some thin washes of reds overlaid with blues/violets... I'm diggin' it so far...

I've missed oils.

The artists' studio

So here's my studio (and office, and sewing room, and glass studio, and where the fish live, and library)

But really, it's my studio.

Right now, it's set up for my current projects (watercolor and oil)

And this is what it looks like:

Underpainting finished

Went back in with some Pthalo Blue acrylic. Deepend areas, added some shadow to the arm, chiseled away the pointy shoulder... then popped out the whites again.

Tomorrow and this weekend I start some oil layers. Woo hoo!

Going green

Added a bit of green to the blue tonite. Trying to push the darks deeper, chiseling out with the white.

I think tomorrow evening may see the end of this stage *fingers crossed*

(On a side note: My fiance has made me aware of the fact that I draw my figures with some of the same features- forearms, nose, the swirl thing, and- what she calls- "the Davis back". I'm not sure what to say to all of that... but I suppose every artist does it to an extent.. look at Rosetti or Schiele...meh. I don't mind)

Some value..

Went in with some white and blue acryllics to pop the values a bit.

I'll probably do 2 or 3 more layers like that, pushing and pulling the values up to a point I'm happy with.

Then, oils...

New Project...

This is the last thing I saw of a dream before I woke. I figured it was a pretty kick ass dream what with it being animated for its' duration untill the end, when the boy rises from the water after having caught a pink salmon... strange, I know, but it's one of those you HAVE to paint...

So I figured I would take the opportunity to illustrate my usual painting process... from concept to finish.

Here we see the final concept sketch next to a penciled canvas. I usually resort to gridding off my canvases if I am transfering an image. Some would say it's very time consuming, but hey, I'm poor and don't have access to a projector.

So here it is, more to follow in the next week...
